I found out recently that I have my own stop sign for me when I go shopping, and it works pretty fine. I would also say that you point out a good point here: parents are teaching our spending habits, they have an important role. I can't thank mine enough to kept remembering me about how important saving money is, and to think rationally when making purchases.
