The Great Grocery Shopping Tip That I Never Knew
- 3 Comment
In a typical trip to Waldbaum’s, Pathmark, or any other major supermarket, I look for deals where buying items in multiples is cheaper than buying them one by one. Sometimes, these deals are nice but occasionally, they are GREAT. Normally, I’d buy the amount that the deals ask so I can pay a lower price.
These deals are all over the place and sometimes, I just want to get a little of each item. So, I just asked an associate whether I can purchase less than the amount specified in order to get a lower price per individual item. He says, “Most of the time, you can.” Nice!
TIP: Most of the time, when it says: “5 for $5”, you can also buy it at 1 for $1. (Not universal for all items and promotions.)

The tip doesn’t work in drug stores though (at least, from my experiences). Back home, I visit the drug store more often than the supermarket, so I’m used to paying the “5 for $5”. Drug stores will charge the retail price if the conditions for the promotion are not met. Because I am so used to this, I assumed that it also applied in a supermarket.
Many savvy shoppers already know this and I feel so stupid to have discovered this just recently, after 2 years of grocery shopping in college.

Usually this doesn’t hold true for fast food chains. I know if they have a 2 for $3 special, they won’t allow you to buy 1 for $1.50. As for grocery stores, I have yet to see a deal where they wouldn’t honor the price for single items.

I never knew that either, but come to think of it, I’ve seen it happen at check-out and I always thought it was a mistake.
Generally, though, because I only buy items that I use, even when other items are on sale, I’ll buy all 5 for $5.00 to save money later on the items I use frequently. I think that’s a much better idea.
