Grocery Shopping: A Success!

As you can tell from the title, the budget that I set up earlier this week seemed to work pretty well.

I followed all the tips and it worked great:

  1. My Post-It note had a small list but it was suffice and exactly what I needed. It served its purpose: buy those items and ONLY those items.
  2. I checked the online ads at Waldbaums.com and the only savings I found were for the chips.
  3. A few of my items were by generic brands. The milk and spaghetti were from America’s Choice, a generic brand common in Waldbaums.
  4. I was set to complete my shopping trip in 15 minutes. It turns out I totally overestimated the required time to pick up all the items on the list. I was actually done in 5 minutes. It helped to know the aisles of the store (and the list was short).

I actually bought something that wasn’t on the list. A box of frozen taquitos was the extra item but I still didn’t go over my budget.

In fact, if you take a look at the receipt, the shopping trip cost me $24.99. I guess I missed my budget by just one penny. I don’t know why I didn’t have to pay tax but I guess it is best not to argue about that.

Plus, with cash back from my credit card, I guess I’m becoming a smarter shopper.

Budgeting rocks?!

Good luck to you on your financial goals. You’re not doing bad at all!

I’ve put together a page on grocer’s websites that you might find useful – it has most US grocer’s sites (if they have them) and many Canadian ones too! Browse the weekly flyers online, print store coupons (you can usually stack these with manufacturer coupons) and some of the larger sites will even let you load your coupons electronically onto your club card (so you don’t have to do any clipping at all).

You can find most manufacturer coupons online at the brands own site. Check these out and sign up for your favorite brands email newsletters to have access to additional coupons.

Finally, buying prepared foods will eat up most of your grocery budget. Save money and eat healthier by learning how to cook a few simple meals from scratch. The best investment a busy and budget-minded student can make is a good crock-pot with a digital timer and warming function. You chop up your ingredients in the morning, maybe saute your onions and meat, throw them in the crock pot, set the timer and come home to a fragrant home and nutritious meal. I LOVE my crock pot on busy days. They aren’t just for pot roasts either. I’m a little bit of a ‘food snob’ and I’ve got gourmet, ‘Cooking Light’ and world cook books (Indian, Italian, French, etc…) for my slow cooker.

    Good luck!
